Located on the banks of the peaceful Hozu River, the Suiran is a super-luxury, intimate hotel that was opened recently as part of Starwood's Luxury Collection (now taken over by the Marriott mothership).
The hotel takes up part of the Tenryu-ji Temple grounds, one of 17 UNESCO heritage sites in Kyoto, and is very close to the magical Arashiyama bamboo forest. The heart of Kyoto’s action, Gion, is about 20 minutes away by taxi.
The Suiran Hotel has 39 big, luxury rooms set in a three-story Japanese style building. Each room is decorated with Japan’s traditional colors and 17 of the rooms are equipped with Japanese spring water onsen baths with natural Arashiyama spa water for guests to relax in.
Rooms on the ground floor are enchanting and exceedingly private, with discrete gardens to lounge in, but they don’t have any views the upstairs rooms have balconies.
The hotel’s two historic buildings have been renovated and converted into stylish understated restaurants - for locally inspired meals, the Kyo-Suiran restaurant and Saryo Hassui cafe (with waterside dining) offer a variety of gourmet options.
The Suiran hotel also offers a private spa service, including in-room treatments and two treatment rooms appointed with Japanese-style open-air baths.Review updated March 16, 2017
