The Aoi Hotel Kyoto mixes modern minimalism and Scandinavian vintage furniture with traditional Japanese interior design to good effect. This is a new luxury boutique hotel (opened in 2015) that feels more like you're in your own self-service apartment, thanks to the large size of the rooms at either 35sqm or 70sqm.
There are only six rooms at Aoi and all of them come packed of the usual luxury hotel amenities including free Wi-Fi and Bose sound systems. Bathrooms feature a with a deep cedar Japanese tub and shower, slippers and free toiletries.
The larger rooms have a private balcony with views overlooking Kyoto's Kamo River. In-room dining is easy with a kitchen/dining area that comes equipped with a refrigerator and microwave.
Aoi Hotel is located on a quiet street, but still in the heart of Kyoto. Kawaramachi Station is a 5 minute walk away with Yasaka Shrine a little further. Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Heian Shrine and JR Kyoto Station can all be reached within a 15-minute drive. Guests can rent a bike at a location 100m from the hotel, or jump in a taxi directly outside the hotel.
Aoi does not serve meals and doesn't have a restaurant or any communal reception areas. However, this hotel is all about location and being very close to the shopping and entertainment district of Gion more than makes up for this.
There are many cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance - try the Kaiseki dinner at the Matsunoya restaurant next to the hotel. The concierge service can help with all restaurant bookings and tours in the area.Review updated March 10, 2017
